City of New Fairview awarded the Bronze Leaf

New Fairview, TX, – March 10, 2025

The City of New Fairview was recently awarded the Bronze Leaf Award by the Cross Timbers Urban Foresty Council. The award was presented at the North Texas Tree Conference at the Hurst Conference Center on February 27.

The City received this award as a result of the tree planting project on November 23, 2024 at the Chacon Community Park. Participating in the event were the Northwest ISD Chisholm Trail Middle School Student Council, parents, and sponsors, the youth group from the Rhome Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Courtney Blevins with the Texas Forest Service, members of the Citizen Forester Program, the New Fairview Parks and Recreation Board, and the City Council. The group helped plant eleven Cedar Elm trees and one large Live Oak tree as phase one of the Landscaping plan for the park. Rainwater was used from the new rainwater harvest system at the municipal complex to water the trees.

“The New Fairview Parks and Recreation Board is actively collaborating with city staff to enhance our park. Our objective is to create an enjoyable recreational experience and foster a supportive learning environment while prioritizing sustainability. We appreciate the valuable contributions of the volunteers who participated in the tree planting project, which helped us achieve this recognition,” stated Jenifer Kozlowski, Chair of the Parks and Recreation Board. “We are currently pursuing grant applications to acquire additional trees and develop a community garden in partnership with the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District.”

The City is working on phase two of tree planting from our landscaping plan for the park. The City is also working in partnership with the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District for the construction of a community garden and outdoor learning center on about one quarter acres of the Chacon Community Park. The plan is to plant native and drought tolerant plants and shrubs with education signage along a natural walk trail. We hope to educate the public on the types of plants that protect soil health, reduce overwatering, reduce erosion and weathering, and are easier to keep alive during unexpected weather events. The City also plans to install a rainwater harvest tank in the park and connect to the irrigation for this community garden, with information on soil horizons and rainwater harvesting. We will be working with the Northwest ISD on have students help with the design of this community garden and learning center plants protect soil health, reduce overwatering, reduce erosion and weathering, and are easier to keep alive during unexpected weather events, and will invite the students to help with the plantings for this project.

The Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to increasing awareness in urban and community forestry. They provide wonderful activities and resources to learn more about the Cross Timbers ecosystem and how to protect it.
